Chemical Wash & PCB Cleaning Service
Contamination is one of the most common causes of industrial electronic failure. Flux residue, dust, oil, moisture ingress, and corrosion cause short circuits, tracking faults, and intermittent failures on PCBs, control boards, and drive assemblies. Our PCB chemical wash and cleaning service removes contamination thoroughly — often restoring boards that appear beyond repair and would otherwise be written off.
The cleaning process:
Boards are cleaned using a combination of IPA (isopropyl alcohol) wash, ultrasonic cleaning, and specialist electronic-grade cleaning solvents, depending on the type and level of contamination present. Ultrasonic cleaning uses high-frequency sound waves to agitate the cleaning fluid, reaching beneath components and into areas that manual cleaning cannot access. After cleaning, boards are thoroughly dried before inspection and testing.
Where a conformal coating is present — a protective lacquer applied to boards in harsh environments — we remove this before cleaning and reapply it after repair if required. This is common on offshore, marine, and industrial control electronics.
We clean and treat:
- PCBs and control boards contaminated with flux residue, dust, or industrial oils
- Boards with moisture ingress or active corrosion damage
- Drive and inverter boards from harsh factory and industrial environments
- Marine and offshore electronics exposed to salt air, humidity, and condensation
- Electronics requiring conformal coating removal prior to fault-finding or repair
- Boards requiring re-coating after repair for ongoing environmental protection
Combined with repair: chemical cleaning is most commonly carried out alongside a fault diagnosis and repair. Contamination can mask faults and damage components — cleaning first gives our engineers a clear view of the board before work begins. If your equipment needs both cleaning and repair, this is handled as a single job with one quote covering all work.
All chemical waste is handled and disposed of in accordance with our ISO 14001 environmental management certification.
Cable & Harness Repair
A damaged cable can halt a machine just as effectively as a failed PCB. We repair and reconfigure industrial cables and wiring harnesses for machinery, drives, and control systems — including bespoke and obsolete assemblies no longer available from the OEM.
This is one of the most common jobs we carry out for offshore vessels and platforms, marine installations, and automotive production lines — environments where cables take heavy punishment and original replacements are often no longer available.
We repair and manufacture:
- Encoder and resolver cables for servo drives and motors
- Control and signal cables for CNC, PLC, and automation systems
- Power cables for industrial drives and inverters
- Custom cable assemblies and harnesses to original specification
- Damaged connectors, terminals, and screened cables
- Replacement cables for offshore, vessel, and marine equipment where OEM spares are no longer available
If you can supply the original cable or a wiring diagram, we can manufacture a replacement to the same specification — getting your equipment back into service without waiting for parts that may no longer exist.
Drive & Equipment Configuration
Configuration simply means making sure equipment is set up correctly so it works with your machine. When a drive or controller is repaired or replaced, the settings inside it need to match your specific motor, process, and control system — otherwise the equipment won't run correctly even if the hardware itself is fine.
For example: a drive can be perfectly repaired, but if the speed range, acceleration ramp, or communication settings don't match the original setup, it will behave differently on your machine. We check and set the wiring configuration, hardware configuration, and parameter configuration before any unit leaves us.
What we configure:
- AC and DC drives — ABB, Siemens, Danfoss, Mitsubishi, Parker, Lenze, and others
- Parameter backup and restoration before and after repair
- Motor data entry and auto-tune so the drive matches your motor exactly
- Speed, torque, and process control settings
- Communication setup — Profibus, Modbus, CANopen
- Documentation of all settings for your records
This service can be provided alongside a repair or as a standalone job when you are installing a replacement unit and need it set up before it goes back into service.
Industrial Equipment Modification
When equipment needs to be adapted rather than simply repaired, our engineers carry out modifications to PCBs, control panels, and electronic assemblies — upgrading obsolete components, adapting equipment for new applications, and retrofitting older machinery with improved controls.
Equipment modification is particularly common in the offshore sector and on marine vessels, where equipment must meet specific environmental or operational requirements, or where an original part is no longer available and the unit needs to be adapted to accept a modern equivalent. We also carry out modifications for automotive production lines where control systems need to be updated without replacing the entire machine.
Modification work includes:
- Component upgrades to replace discontinued or obsolete parts
- Circuit modifications to improve reliability or performance
- Control panel additions and rewiring for process changes
- Retrofitting newer drive technology into legacy machinery
- Adding monitoring, protection, or communication features to existing equipment
- Adapting equipment to meet offshore, marine, or automotive operational requirements
- Adapting imported equipment to UK voltage and standards
All modification work is scoped, quoted, and documented before work begins. Every job is functionally tested before return.
Preventive Maintenance for Industrial Electronics
Most industrial electronic failures don't happen without warning — they develop over time through component ageing, contamination, and thermal stress. Preventive maintenance catches these issues before they cause unplanned downtime, letting you schedule work around production rather than react to breakdowns.
Preventive maintenance covers:
- Inspection and cleaning of PCBs, drives, and control panels
- Electrolytic capacitor condition testing and scheduled replacement
- Thermal imaging and heat stress assessment
- Fan and cooling system inspection in drives and power supplies
- Connection and terminal tightness checks
- Identification of components approaching end of life
- Condition reports with recommended actions and timescales
Particularly valuable for critical equipment on production lines, offshore and marine systems, and industrial machinery where spare parts carry long lead times or are no longer available. We work to your planned shutdown schedule so production is not disrupted. All maintenance work is documented — useful for ISO 9001 audit trails and maintenance records.
Why customers choose NPE for these services
We carry out these services ourselves, in our Newcastle workshop. Nothing is subcontracted. When you contact us, you speak directly with our engineers — not a call centre.
All work is done by our own degree-qualified engineers at our Newcastle workshop. We do not subcontract. You get skilled people who understand industrial electronics — not a third party who hasn't seen the equipment before.
Our quality management and environmental management systems are independently certified. For customers who require certified supply chain documentation, we can provide evidence of certification.
We have been repairing and servicing industrial electronics since the late 1990s. Our engineers have hands-on experience with a wide range of equipment — including legacy and obsolete industrial systems other companies won't touch.
We are a NOF member and regularly support the offshore, vessel, and marine sectors — industries where equipment reliability matters and downtime is expensive. Our engineers understand the demands of these environments.
Many of these services are carried out alongside a repair — cleaning before fault diagnosis, configuration after a drive is repaired, cable replacement alongside a control board job. One visit, one quote, one return shipment.
We assess the equipment first and tell you exactly what it needs. If it isn't worth repairing, we say so. If a simpler fix is available, we recommend it. You get an honest assessment, not a sales pitch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you combine a chemical wash with a repair on the same job?
Yes — in most cases cleaning and repair are handled together. If your board requires cleaning before fault diagnosis is possible, we carry this out as part of the assessment and repair. You receive a single quote covering all work.
Do you carry out preventive maintenance on-site or do we send equipment to you?
Most preventive maintenance work is carried out at our workshop in Newcastle. For large installations or equipment that cannot easily be removed, we can discuss on-site visits. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
Can you configure a replacement drive to match our existing setup?
Yes. If you have a parameter file from the original drive we can use this to configure the replacement. If the file is not available, we work from your motor nameplate data and application requirements. We always recommend backing up drive parameters before a failure occurs.
Can you manufacture a replacement cable no longer available from the OEM?
In many cases, yes. If you can supply the original cable or a wiring diagram, we can manufacture a replacement to the same specification. This is a common requirement for older machinery where OEM spares are no longer produced.
Do these services include a warranty?
Warranty terms depend on the type of work carried out. Where applicable, warranty details are confirmed in writing at the time of quotation. Contact us to discuss the specific service you require and we will advise accordingly.
