We work on all major brands — Siemens, Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, Omron, Schneider Electric, Proface, Beijer, and more — including obsolete and discontinued models where the OEM no longer provides support or replacement parts.

HMI and display types we repair

Touchscreen Panels

Resistive and capacitive touch panels. Unresponsive, inaccurate, or dead touch zones diagnosed and repaired at component level.

LCD & TFT Displays

LCD and TFT industrial screens with brightness loss, dead pixels, flickering, or no display output. Backlight and driver board repair.

Operator Panels

Push-button, membrane keypad, and function key operator panels. Key failures, membrane wear, and control board faults repaired.

Industrial PCs

Panel-mounted and rack-mounted industrial computers with display, board, or power supply faults. Including legacy IPC hardware.

CRT Monitors

Legacy CRT industrial monitors still in service on older machinery. Deflection, power supply, and tube-related faults diagnosed.

Remote Panels

Remote operator interfaces, junction box displays, and distributed HMI panels. Communication and display faults resolved.

We also repair plasma displays, monochrome panels, membrane overlays, and multi-axis motion control interfaces. If your HMI type is not listed, contact us — we assess most industrial display and interface technology.

HMI faults we diagnose and repair

Screen brightness loss or dimming

Backlight degradation or failure is one of the most common HMI faults in older displays. Backlight assemblies and driver boards repaired or replaced.

Flickering or unstable display

Flickering screens caused by failed capacitors on the display driver board, loose ribbon cables, or failing backlight inverters. Root cause identified before repair.

Horizontal or vertical lines

Lines across the screen indicate failed column or row drivers on the LCD panel or driver board. Diagnosed and repaired at component level where possible.

Unresponsive touch

Touchscreen that does not respond or registers incorrect positions. Touch controller failure, digitiser damage, or ribbon cable faults identified and repaired.

Dead pixels or blank areas

Localised pixel failure, blank zones, or partial display loss. Display panel and driver board assessed for root cause before any repair is carried out.

HMI not powering on

Power supply faults within the HMI unit itself — failed regulators, blown fuses, capacitor failure on the PSU board. Full power section diagnosis.

HMI resetting or freezing

Intermittent resets, lockups, or slow boot caused by memory faults, processor issues, or unstable power rails on the main control board.

Communication fault with PLC

HMI showing communication errors or failing to connect to the PLC or control system. Communication hardware and protocol configuration checked and repaired.

Membrane keypad failure

Membrane keys that no longer register or require excessive pressure. Membrane overlay and keypad controller assessed — membrane replacement where required.

Cracked or damaged screen

Physical screen damage causing display failure. Display panel assessment and replacement where the screen is integral to the unit and cannot be replaced separately.

Obsolete HMI repair — when no replacement exists

Many industrial facilities run HMIs and operator panels that were manufactured in the 1990s and 2000s — hardware that the OEM discontinued years ago. When these fail, there is no new replacement available at any price. The choice becomes: repair it, or replace the entire machine control system at enormous cost.

We repair obsolete and discontinued HMIs that other companies turn away. Using ABI BoardMaster diagnostics, we can reverse-engineer control boards without original schematics, source period-correct components, and return the unit to full working order. We have repaired HMIs from machines still in production that the original manufacturer stopped supporting over a decade ago.

If you have an obsolete HMI with no available replacement, contact us with the make, model, and fault description before assuming it cannot be repaired.

Our HMI repair process

1

Receive, log & inspect

Your HMI is logged on receipt and visually inspected for physical damage, contamination, and signs of prior failure. The display, touch interface, power section, and control boards are checked before any test power is applied.

2

Component-level fault diagnosis

We test down to component level using specialist HMI test equipment and ABI BoardMaster diagnostics. We identify exactly what failed and why before any repair begins — preventing repeat failures caused by an underlying fault that was not found.

3

Written quotation

A written quote is provided covering all work required. If the HMI is beyond economic repair — for example where a cracked LCD panel costs more than a refurbished equivalent — we advise you clearly and honestly.

4

Component repair and replacement

Faulty components are replaced with quality parts to the original specification. Backlight assemblies, driver boards, capacitors, touch controllers, and membrane overlays are replaced as required.

5

Functional testing

The repaired HMI is powered up and tested for full display function, touch accuracy, communication, and software operation. We do not return an HMI until it has passed functional testing and we are satisfied it will perform correctly in service.

6

Repair report & return

A full repair report is provided — fault found, work carried out, and components replaced. Useful for your maintenance records and ISO 9001 audit trail. Returned by courier with warranty confirmed in writing.

Why customers choose NPE for HMI repair

HMI repair requires a different skill set from drive or PCB repair. Here is what matters most.

Component-level, not unit swap

We identify and replace the failed component — not the entire board or unit. This is the only approach that makes economic sense for high-value or obsolete HMIs.

Obsolete HMI specialists

We repair discontinued HMIs using ABI BoardMaster to diagnose boards without schematics. If the OEM stopped supporting your panel, that does not mean it cannot be repaired.

Assessed within 1–2 working days

We assess incoming HMIs quickly and provide a written quote without delay. Downtime on a production line costs more than the repair — we know that.

Warranty included as standard

All repaired HMIs carry a minimum 6-month warranty. Extended cover up to 24 months is available — choose the level that suits your operation. Confirmed in writing with every quotation.

ISO 9001 certified

Every HMI repair is documented and functionally tested before return. Our ISO 9001 certification is independently audited — providing the documentation trail your maintenance records require.

NOF member — offshore approved

We are a recognised supplier to the offshore and energy sector. HMI repair for offshore platforms requires an understanding of the environment and documentation standards — we have both.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I send my HMI for repair?

Contact us first with the HMI make, model, and fault description. We will confirm we can help and advise on packaging — HMI screens must be protected carefully during transit to avoid additional damage. We accept units by courier and can arrange collection for larger or heavier panels.

Can you repair an obsolete HMI that is no longer manufactured?

Yes. Obsolete HMI repair is one of our specialisms. When the OEM has discontinued the product, repair is often the only option that does not require replacing the entire machine control system. We use ABI BoardMaster diagnostics to work without original schematics and source equivalent components for older hardware.

Can you repair a cracked HMI touchscreen?

It depends on the nature of the damage and the specific unit. In some cases, the display panel can be replaced as part of the repair. In others, physical cracking has caused internal damage to the control boards as well. We assess each unit individually and advise whether repair is viable and cost-effective before any work begins.

Will the software and parameters be retained after repair?

In most cases, yes. Where the fault is hardware-related and the memory or software storage is intact, settings and programmes are retained. If there is a risk of software loss during repair, we advise you in advance. We recommend customers keep a backup of HMI programme files where possible — we can advise on how to do this before shipping.

Is it worth repairing an old HMI rather than buying a new one?

In most cases, yes — particularly where replacing the HMI would also require reprogramming, rewriting screen graphics, or modifying the machine control system to accommodate a different product. Repair preserves the original software and machine settings. The cost of repair is typically 20–40% of a new equivalent where one exists, and often the only option where it does not.

Do you offer a warranty on HMI repairs?

All repaired HMIs carry a minimum 6-month warranty as standard. Extended warranty up to 24 months is available — customers can choose the level of cover that suits their needs and budget. Warranty terms are confirmed in writing with your quotation.

Can you repair an HMI on-site if it is built into the machine?

In some cases, yes. Contact us to discuss your situation. Many HMIs can be removed and sent for bench repair, but where this is not practical we can advise on on-site options or temporary solutions to keep the machine operational while the repair is carried out.
