Obsolete & Legacy Circuit Boards
When a circuit board fails, your machine stops. We diagnose and repair industrial PCBs and control boards at component level — getting your equipment back into service faster and at far less cost than a replacement. In-house engineers, no subcontracting, based in Newcastle.
Circuit board failure is one of the most common causes of industrial equipment downtime. Our engineers diagnose and repair PCBs, control boards, and drive electronics — returning faulty boards to full working order at a fraction of the cost of a new unit or replacement assembly. We serve clients across the UK, including marine, offshore, and manufacturing sectors.
Circuit boards and PCBs we repair
We work on circuit boards from drives, inverters, servo systems, PLCs, power supplies, HMIs, and industrial control panels. This includes single and double-sided PCBs, multi-layer boards, and mixed-signal assemblies. We also repair boards from older and obsolete equipment where the OEM no longer offers a replacement.
If your PCB is part of a larger assembly or a machine we're not familiar with, send us a description or photos and we'll advise on whether we can help before you ship anything.
Faults we diagnose and repair
Capacitors, resistors, transistors, MOSFETs, IGBTs, diodes, and ICs identified and replaced.
Damaged PCB tracks repaired, cold solder joints reflowed, and pad damage addressed.
Flux residue, moisture ingress, oil, and corrosion cleaned and treated before repair.
Protection circuits, varistors, and transient suppressors assessed and replaced after surge events.
Components and PCB areas damaged by overheating identified, root cause investigated, and repaired.
Faults that appear and disappear are among the hardest to fix. We use specialist test equipment to reproduce and identify intermittent failures.
How we test circuit boards
Accurate fault finding is what separates a proper repair from a guess. We use a range of test equipment and methods depending on the board type and the fault presented.
Our workshop uses ABI Electronics BoardMaster — a specialist circuit board testing system that analyses component behaviour in-circuit without needing to power the board. This allows us to identify failed or degraded components quickly, including in areas where visual inspection alone would miss the fault.
For drive and power electronics boards, we also use oscilloscopes, component testers, thermal cameras, and bench power supplies to recreate operating conditions and confirm the fault before and after repair.
Every repaired board is functionally tested before it leaves our workshop. We do not return a board until we are satisfied it will perform correctly in service.
Our circuit board repair process
Receive & inspect
Your board is logged, inspected visually, and assessed for obvious damage. We check for contamination, physical damage, burnt components, and any signs of prior repair attempts.
Fault diagnosis
We use ABI BoardMaster and bench test equipment to identify the fault. For boards that require cleaning before diagnosis is possible, this is done first at no additional charge if combined with repair.
Written quotation
We provide a written quote for the repair. If the board is not repairable or not worth repairing, we tell you clearly — and explain why.
Repair & component replacement
Faulty components are replaced with quality parts to the original specification where possible. PCB track repairs, rework, and cleaning are carried out as required.
Functional testing & return
The repaired board is tested and confirmed working. A repair report is provided covering the fault found and work carried out. Your board is returned with appropriate packaging.

Industries we support
We carry out circuit board and PCB repair for clients across the UK — with particular focus on marine, offshore, and manufacturing sectors.
What our customers say
The drive control board came back repaired within the week. Machine is back running and the repair cost a fraction of what a new drive would have been. Would use NPE again without hesitation.
Sent a PCB that two other companies had said was beyond repair. NPE diagnosed it, quoted us fairly, and had it back to us working. Clear communication throughout.
Really appreciated the honest assessment — they told us upfront what they found and what it would cost. No unexpected charges. The board came back with a detailed report as well.
Why customers choose NPE for circuit board repair
Any repair company can replace a capacitor. What sets us apart is how we diagnose, what we use to test, and how we communicate with you throughout.
We don't guess. We identify the fault using ABI BoardMaster and bench test equipment, then quote. You know exactly what you're paying for before we start work.
Your board is worked on by our own degree-qualified engineers in Newcastle. We don't pass work to third parties. You get consistent quality and direct answers when you ask questions.
We assess incoming boards quickly and contact you with our findings and quote. We know downtime is expensive — we don't let your job sit waiting.
We regularly repair boards for equipment the OEM no longer supports. If the part number is discontinued, we find an alternative or work around it. We don't give up because a board is old.
Every repair is documented. Every board is functionally tested before return. Our ISO 9001 certification means our quality processes are independently audited — not just claimed.
If a board cannot be repaired, or if the repair cost doesn't make sense against replacement, we tell you. We don't carry out repairs that won't deliver value for your business.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I send my circuit board to you?
Contact us first with a description of the board and the fault — we'll confirm we can help and advise how to package and ship it. Anti-static packaging is recommended for sensitive electronics. We accept boards sent by post or courier, and can arrange collection for larger assemblies.
Can you repair a board if you don't have the schematics?
In most cases, yes. Our engineers work without schematics regularly — using test equipment, reverse engineering, and experience with similar boards to diagnose faults. Schematics are helpful when available, but not essential for most repairs.
Can you source replacement components for older boards?
We work to source components for older and obsolete boards, including discontinued ICs and through-hole components that are less commonly stocked. In some cases we may use pin-compatible alternatives where the original component is no longer available. We always advise if a substitution is required.
What if you find multiple faults on the board?
We report all faults found and include them in the quotation. If additional faults are discovered during repair that were not visible at the assessment stage, we contact you before proceeding with additional work.
Do you offer a warranty on circuit board repairs?
Warranty terms depend on the type of repair and the condition of the board. Where applicable, warranty details are confirmed in writing at the time of quotation.
